What is an Umaumalei? Umaumalei is the Hawaiian name for the orangespine unicornfish (Naso lituratus), a native Hawaiian species taken selectively by spearfishers. It inhabits coral and rocky reef with algae growth at 5–60 ft around the Big Island, and is excellent eating.

About the Umaumalei

A traditional Hawaiian food fish taken selectively. Recognized by its orange lips, yellow forehead band, and the two blade-sharp orange spines at the tail base — handle with respect. Firm, clean white flesh prized in local kitchens.

How we hunt them

Feeds on algae along the reef — approach along the bottom and let it work toward you. Mind the tail spines when handling; they are razor sharp.
