What is an Umaumalei? Umaumalei is the Hawaiian name for the orangespine unicornfish (Naso lituratus), a native Hawaiian species taken selectively by spearfishers. It inhabits coral and rocky reef with algae growth at 5–60 ft around the Big Island, and is excellent eating.

About the Umaumalei

A traditional Hawaiian food fish taken selectively. Recognized by its orange lips, yellow forehead band, and the two blade-sharp orange spines at the tail base. Handle with respect. Firm, clean white flesh prized in local kitchens.

How we hunt them

Feeds on algae along the reef. Approach along the bottom and let it work toward you. Mind the tail spines when handling; they are razor sharp.

No statewide size or bag limit.

Top Shot house standard: 10-inch minimum on our dives. State law sets none. Like all native species, umaumalei counts toward our two-per-species, five-total daily house rule.
